What Happens When You Don’t Regularly Brush Your Teeth

There are some nights when you are too drunk, tired, or lazy that you go to sleep without brushing your teeth. The next day, your oral cavity feels sticky and your morning breath is worse than usual. That’s because the remnants of what you ate are still lingering inside your mouth and different kinds of bacteria are feasting on it. For just missing one of the two daily recommended brushings, millions of bad bacteria can grow overnight. If this is how fast bacteria react, imagine what would happen if you missed brushing frequently or you stop brushing for a long time! Thus, dentists from top dental clinics in Makati continuously stresses the importance of regularly brushing your teeth to avoid the following dental issues:

1. Bad Breath

Halitosis is the most common consequence of not brushing your teeth. The smell of saliva, leftover food and bacteria stay in your mouth giving off bad breath. Though people use mouthwash to eliminate this odor, it doesn’t remove or brush away bacteria that lies in your teeth, gums and gaps completely.

2. Enamel Decay

If your teeth are not brushed properly and regularly, your enamel (the protective layer of the teeth) will be prone to stains due to sugary and/or acidic food and drinks. When this happens, bacteria will feed off the leftover food and will create dental plaque. The prolonged presence of this plaque will then cause the enamel coating to break down and subject your teeth to faster decay.

3. Gingivitis

Further plaque build-up will advance to super-plaque and produce tartar that will irritate the gums. As a result, your immune system will automatically perform its inflammatory response to fight off bacteria. This will then cause the gums to become inflamed and to easily bleed during brushing.

4. Periodontitis

Having gingivitis and not brushing your teeth will then put your oral cavity at risk of periodontitis. This disease will make your gum tissues too weak that it can’t hold your pearly whites anymore. If ignored, it will also create irreversible damage such as teeth, tissue and bone loss.

5. Serious Conditions

According to , consistent poor dental hygiene can ultimately contribute to infections and health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders, stroke and possibly cancer. This is because your mouth is home to many bacteria that may enter the bloodstream and affect your overall health.

To avoid these dental issues and other severe problems, dentists in Makati reminds people to regularly practice proper oral hygiene: flossing, brushing and rinsing, Here’s how:

The Effects of Vaping to Oral and Overall Health of Millenials

effects-of-vaping-to-oral-and-overall-health

Vices are very hard to resist. Even though people know the possible danger of continuing their habits, many choose to persist. Meanwhile, others are taking steps to quit their bad habits. They control their urges, talk with counseling experts, and take prescribed medicines. On the other hand, some look for safer alternatives. Thus, the rise of vapes.

Vapes, also known as e-cigarettes or Juul, are undeniably a millennial thing today. According to surveys, millennials are taking the lead to e-cig popularity, wherein they comprise 44% of vapor smokers. But, why are they attracted to this kind of cigarette? What do they contain? What are its effects, especially to dental health? Plus, are they safe? To answer these questions, we’ve asked trusted Filipino dentists from premium dental clinics nationwide.

What vapes do?

A vape is considered a fantastic alternative to traditional cigarettes. They do not contain large amounts of tobacco and don’t produce smoke. Instead, they have a bit of nicotine (derived from a tobacco plant), lesser chemicals, and create a pleasant-smelling aerosol (due to applied juices). They are battery-powered and last longer compared to lighting traditional cigarettes and buying sticks again and again. They are also popular to millennials as they can do cool tricks with the vapor smokes and still smell good after use. Plus, they are believed to propose less harm over regular cigarettes.

What are the effects of vaping?

Let’s start at the good effects first. Vapes are a great investment for many, especially when planning to gradually quit smoking regular cigarettes. All you need is one Juul and a little amount of vape juice then you can use it whenever you want. Hence, you save money while giving up on traditional cigarettes. However, professionals warn about the harmful effects too. There are some reported cases wherein vapes overheat, crack or explode then lead to accidents and injuries. Hence, having an authentic Juul and cautiously using it is very vital.

When it comes to health, research shows that vapes are safer than traditional cigarettes (due to smaller amounts of nicotine and chemicals) but this doesn’t mean they don’t propose health risks. Filipino dentists state that the nicotine ingredient may still cause excessive oral bacteria, dry mouth, irritation and cell death. Studies also show that nicotine found in vape juices plays a role in the development of periodontal diseases, bone loss, tooth loss and tooth decay.

Are they totally safe?

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, “e-cigarettes have not been fully studied, so consumers currently don’t know the potential risks of e-cigarettes when used as intended, how much nicotine or other potentially harmful chemicals are being inhaled during use, or whether there are any benefits associated with using these products.” However, ongoing clinical studies show that even the small amount of nicotine found in vape juices can still cause and worsen disorders. Plus, there are still cases of exploding e-cigarettes up to this day. Hence, Filipino dentists, remind vapor smokers to be cautious and check on their overall health.

The Bottom Line

Quitting vices is hard, that’s why alternatives easily attract us. But we have to be careful, ask for expert advice, and check our health first before risking ourselves to temporary reliefs.

Dental Clinic in Manila: A Dental World Experience

Dental Clinic in Manila: A Dental World Experience

So I was thinking of doing a blog review today and I thought that this blogpost will be very helpful for people having a hard time looking for a good Dental Clinic in Manila. It took me 3 months to decide on which Dental Clinic to visit after I moved from Bicol.

When I was still a kid, I was really scared of the dentist, but my parents never stopped forcing me to visit the clinic almost every quarter of the year. They decided to look for a new dentist when I was in grade school because they realized that it’s never going to work out between me and my previous one. So my new dentist that time was the one who helped me overcome my fear and also keep my teeth healthy.

Last 2015, I moved to Manila and it was hard for me to look for a good and trusted dentist. I was very reluctant in visiting a new clinic with a different dentist.

Side note: I guess you’re wondering why I always have to visit the dentist. I don’t have super perfect teeth but I always want my teeth to be healthy and clean. I always brush my teeth but, going to the dentist regularly to have like a major cleaning is a good practice.

These past few months, I’ve been very busy with work and I didn’t really have the time to visit my home province. (and I’m sure in the coming months it will be harder for me) I decided to look for a good dental clinic in Manila. I was looking for a complete dental shop. I had 3 choices in mind, GAOC, Dental World and CAD. I’ve read a lot of positive reviews on these clinics.

Few months ago, my sister visited Dental World to have her teeth checked by a Cosmetic Dentist, and her feedback was good. The services are a little pricey but I think having a healthy and beautiful teeth is a good investment so I decided to have my teeth checked at the nearest Dental World clinic.

They have 5 clinics in Manila:

  • St. Luke’s Medical Center – QC
  • SM City North EDSA
  • Glorietta
  • SM Mall of Asia
  • Centuria Medical Makati – Opening Soon!

My location is in Makati so I went to their Glorietta Branch. I really like how they treat their patients. So after my consultation, I visited their clinic once a week for my first month to have my teeth checked. I would recommend this clinic because they really take good care of your teeth.

I finally found a new trusted dental clinic and dentist (Dr. Mendoza) here in Manila. Thank you Dental World!

Dental Clinic Gears Up for Medical Tourism

Dental Clinic Gears Up for Medical Tourism

This down-to-earth man with a perpetual smile on his face has established himself as one of the country’s respected and well-known dental practitioners.

Travelers, especially balikbayan, OFWs and local clients have recognized the superior quality of the cosmetic dentistry in the country. It is not surprising to see patients jetting in to his clinics all over Metro Manila for a “smile-makeover holiday.”

“Healthcare costs which have skyrocketed in the developed world have led the adventurous medical tourists to look for dental clinics and hospitals in the country that have topnotch doctors, high-tech equipment and competitive costs,” says Dr. Malony Santos.

The dental clinics of Santos, who has several years of experience in dental clinic operation and administration, are gearing up to compete in the lucrative medical tourism market.

In its bid to get a slice of the growing market, Santos has put up a world–class dental healthcare complex that can serve hundreds of patients annually.

And consistent with its thrust on healthcare promotion, the M. L. Santos Dental Cosmetic and TMJ Center has launched several dental health promotion programs.

“Our clinics have established cutting-edge dental health services in the areas of dental cosmetics, implantology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, TMJ-orthopedics and general dentistry,” Santos said.

“We bring good smile to life” is the motto of Santos’ clinics, which can complete “smile makeovers” in as least seven days, making it convenient for foreign travelers, especially balikbayan on a visit, to achieve superior results at a reasonable price.

The dental clinics offer integrated, specialized and customized treatment and care using a unique multi-discipline approach.

Clients are given the utmost comfort, including complimentary pick-up and delivery during their entire visit and assistance with their travel and hotel arrangements.

Santos said his clients experience the world-famous Filipino hospitality, just as in Filipino homes and five-star hotels.

“We deliver the one thing that people want in healthcare but don’t expect to get — service,” he added.

Santos’ clinics boast of 15 doctors at a time, all of whom are experts in their respective fields of specialization, and an efficient allied medical and administrative staff.

The M. L. Santos Dental Cosmetics and TMJ Center recently inaugurated its Makati branch along Buendia Avenue.

Bring Back Your Smile with Restorative Dentistry

Bring Back Your Smile with Restorative Dentistry

A smile that has been ruined by disease or traumatic injury need not be permanent. There are still many ways to restore that smile thanks to modern dental treatments. One of these treatments, which is a relatively simple procedure that requires neither surgery nor a long recovery period, is Restorative Dentistry, also known as Tooth Bonding.

“Tooth Bonding is a simple dental procedure where colored material is placed on the surface of a tooth, for the purpose of repairing a decayed tooth or a tooth that was chipped due to occlusal force or an accident; or to mask discolored teeth.

“Composite resin material is also used to replace, or as an alternative to, a metal filling. Another use of composite filling is to cover a root part of the tooth which has been exposed due to excessive tooth brushing force and gum recession,” said Dr. Malony L. Santos of Dental World Manila.

Dr. Santos added that restorations done using composite resin material can help a patient recover the function of his or her natural tooth. Furthermore, tooth restorations done through composite materials look more aesthetically pleasing compared to metal fillings.

Tooth Bonding using composite restoration can treat simple to complex cases of tooth damage. An adjunct such as retentive pins can be used to reinforce the strength of a composite filling in cases two walls of the affected tooth are being reinforced or built up.

Tooth restorations using this treatment can last several years before they need to be repaired or replaced due to stains. Adherence of the material depends on the extent of the restoration work and on occlusal force in the affected area. Once the procedure is done, a patient may be asked to return after 24 hours so the dentist can trim down any sharp edges.

While tooth restorations through Tooth Bonding can restore a natural tooth’s function, the composite material is not as strong as a natural tooth. Chewing food ordinary food is all right but if a patient bites on hard candy, an ice chip, or some other tough material, the composite can break and dislodge, in which case it would need replacement. Dr. Santos mentioned a few reminders for patients undergoing Restorative Dentistry/Tooth Binding.

“The patient and the dentist must discuss the limits that the composite restorations can do, so the patient will have realistic expectations from the procedure. And like all dental procedures, Restorative Dentistry begins with oral prophylaxis or tooth cleaning.

“Composite restorations can be stained by certain foods and beverages like tea or chocolates. Cigarette smoking also stains them. To minimize this, a patient should avoid such foods and smoking as much as possible. Regular brushing using a soft-bristled toothbrush, plus regular dental visits every 6 months, for oral prophylaxis and tooth polishing, are essential—not.

Spreading Happiness, One Smile at a Time

Dental World Manila - The New You Magazine

In all cultures, children are collectively depicted to have a fear of going to the dentist, or at the least a dislike of brushing, a sentiment that supposedly carries over to adulthood. No wonder then hat few survive adolescence with a healthy set of permanent teeth.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the spectrum, all people - regardless of language, have a shared appreciation and understanding of the simplest but most genuine of gestures: a smile. With a slight movement of the lips, boundaries are miraculously broken.

According to Dr. Sheila Ranido of Dental World, it is definitely the idea of giving patients their best smile which inspires her and her colleagues to do their difficult jobs. For her, a smile does not only instantly improve a person's looks, instead, it has the ability to change and transform lives.

"I once had a patient who neither had the confidence to talk to people and much more smile, not even in photos. Mother nature had not gifted her with a perfect smile so she felt embarrassed at the idea of others seeing her smile," recalls Dr. Sheila.

Through modern science and the combined effort of the Dental World family, Dr. Sheila's patient was able to get the solution to her problem - a smile makeover. A simple procedure had, in giving the patient the confidence to smile, changed her life in so many ways.

More About Dental Implants

Tooth Implants Philippines

Tooth Implants are made to replace the lost natural teeth due to decay, infection, trauma and periodontal disease. It is an artificial replacement for natural teeth. It is designed in such a way to mimic roots of a natural tooth. Dental implants are made of titanium metal, the only kind of metal that is compatible to human body.

Before implants are placed and inserted into the bone of upper or lower jaw, your implant dentist will require a thorough diagnosis to see if you are a candidate to receive the implants to check if you have quality bone enough to hold the implants. Normally, this will include taking of panoramic x-ray, intraoral pictures, impression to make the cast and to some extent a CBCT Scan that is now popular with Dental Implantologist for being accurate and precise when it comes to diagnosis. Unfortunately, this CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) Dental Scan is not available in any dental clinic because of the high price of this machine.

A. Conventional Dental Implants

The treatment time for conventional type is around 3 to 6 months in 5 to 7 dental appointments with your implant dentist. This type of implant will attach to your bone in the process called Osseointegration. After the implants are totally integrated to your bone that is the only time your implant dentist can do the final prosthesis or the porcelain crown.

Some patients are even required to undergo bone grafting procedure if they do not have enough bone to support the implants. This will complicate the implant procedure and treatment time becomes longer. It can last even for more than a year.
Some patients have very low sinus for being edentulous (without teeth) for so many years. This will also complicate implants placement on the upper jaw and this might require bone grafting and sinus lifting procedures before implants can be placed.

One advantage of tooth implants compared to having removable dentures or porcelain crown or bridge is that it would prevent shrinkage of your bone after teeth have been extracted.

B. Mini dental Implants

This is the smaller type of tooth implants which is only 1.8mm to 3mm compared to 3.3mm to 5mm of conventional type. This is specifically made for patients whose ridge or bone have thinned because of being no teeth for a long period of time. Mini implants becomes an alternative dental treatment for patients who wants to have implants but cannot be accommodated by the conventional type.

One advantage of mini teeth implants is the shorter treatment time and practically no downtime. Mini dental implants can be placed in just one day with virtually no discomfort. It is just being screwed into your bone with no cutting of the gums and stiches to remove.

Some implant dentists will use mini dental implants to hold porcelain crown and bridges but some would discouraged this practice as this might cause  problem later on. Remember that there is no actual integration of implants into your bone unlike with the conventional dental implants thus there is the tendency for mini implants to get loose eventually.

One good use of mini dental implants is the stabilization of upper or lower complete dentures. Normally, four implants can be placed on upper or lower arch. This procedure can be done in 1 to 2 hours in one appointment with your implant dentist and presto you have a stable complete denture that you can use right away without discomfort.

My advice for patients who are thinking of having implants is to not wait too long and consult an implantologist  at once after you have undergone extraction. One to two months after tooth extraction is the ideal time to place an implants. Implants placement is rather an easy procedure so do not wait until your bones are all gone. You can save a lot of money, time and the inconvinience of having several surgical procedures if it can be done earlier.

One to five implants placement are usually done in the dental office set up but for more implants with bone grafting and sinus lifting procedures, my advice is to have it done inside the operating room under general anesthesia.

Teeeh implants are now common procedure in any dental clinic. So what are you waiting for? Come and visit a dentist in your area for consultation or come and visit us here in the Philippines and have a great discount on your dental procedure.

A Smile Worthy of a Pageant Beauty

A Smile Worthy of a Pageant Beauty

How does one get a perfect smile? “Either you are born with it or you’re not” says Dr. Malony L. Santos, head dentist of Dental World Manila, formerly ML Santos Dental Cosmetics and TMJ Center. Even so, Dr. Santos assures, those who are not naturally gifted with a perfect set of teeth can achieve it. And his clinic has made that possible for many patients, transforming them into gods and goddesses of beauty.

With 16 years of dental practice under his belt and a long list of high-profile clients, Dr. Santos was chosen as the head judge for the Best Smile award during the 2008 Miss Earth pageant.

All things considered, Mother Nature has been generous to all the 85 candidates, but Dr. Santos and 3 associates from Dental World Manila carefully evaluated each one to determine which of the ingénues wins the award and the P15,000 gift certificate from his renowned clinic.

The criteria the judges used very well define what a perfect smile is: well-aligned and pearly white teeth, complete dentition (no missing teeth), caries-free, good bite, a smile not reaching the gum line, and pinkish gums. After deliberating, the judges declared Miss Brazil the winner. On coronation night, Miss Brazil sailed through to the finals and won Miss Fire.

In the run-up to pageant night, the Brazilian, along with the other Miss Earth contestants, visited Dental World Manila. All were more than eager to consult with Dr. Santos and discover the treatments that would enhance their beauty even more. The gorgeous environmental ambassadors were particularly interested in cosmetic procedures, teeth-whitening, and dental veneers, and keen on getting a complete smile makeover. They stayed in the clinic for a while, enjoying the hearty local meals prepared for them, getting acquainted with the staff, and having a photoshoot with the expert team of dentists.

Dr. Santos aims to provide the less endowed the opportunity to look as good and be as healthy as the Miss Earth candidates. There is, indeed, no shortcut to a perfect smile, but his team is more than capable of creating it for patients.

Dental World Manila is composed of highly skilled dentists, whose fields of specialization cover the major and critical branches of dentistry. They are supported by state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including an in-house laboratory for diagnostics, X-ray, and surgery. All these make Dental World Manila a complete hub for dental care. Transcending general cleaning and healthful treatments, the clinic, with Dr. Santos leading the way, provides total makeovers that will change one’s overall aura and appeal perhaps worthy of a pageant crown.

Can My Dentist Improve My Smile?

Can My Dentist Improve My Smile?

From subtle changes to major repairs, your dentist can perform a variety of procedures to improve your smile. There are many techniques and options to treat teeth that are discolored, chipped, misshapen or missing. Doctor Malony L. Santos dentist at the SM Mall of Asia Philippines, will reshape your teeth. Common procedures include teeth bleaching, tooth bonding, Dental caps, Dental crowns, Dental veneers and reshaping and contouring.

A. Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening is a common and popular chemical process used to whiten teeth. Some people get their teeth bleached to make stains disappear while other just wants a whiter shade. Discoloration occurs in the enamel and can be caused by medication, coffee, tea and cigarette. Discoloration also can be caused by your genetic make-up or simply getting older. Bleaching can be performed by your dentist in the office or under dental supervision, at home. Many patients enjoy bleaching at home because it is more convenient. Treatment begins when your dentist creates a custom mouthpiece to ensure the correct amount of whitening solution - 10 percent to 20 percent carbamide peroxide-is used and that your teeth are properly exposed. Typically whitening at home takes two or three weeks, depending on the desired shade you wish to achieve. Whitening in the office may call for two to six 45-minute visits to your dentist’s office.

B. Tooth Bonding

Tooth Bonding is tooth-colored material used to fill in gaps or change the color of teeth. Requiring a single office visit, bonding lasts several years. Bonding is more susceptible to staining or chipping than other forms of restoration. When teeth are chipped or slightly decayed, bonded composite resins may be the material of choice. Tooth Bonding also is used as a tooth-colored filling for small cavities and broken or chipped surfaces. Additionally, it can be used to close spaces between teeth or caver the entire outside surface of a tooth to change its color and shape.

C. Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns also known as Dental Caps are used in cases where other procedures will not be effective. Dental Crowns have the longest life expectancy of all dental cosmetics restorations, but are the most time consuming.

D. Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers or laminates are placed over the front teeth to change color or shape of your teeth. Porcelain Veneers are used on teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, discolored, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced or crooked. Porcelain Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or plastic cemented over the front of your teeth. Little or no anesthesia is needed. Porcelain Veneers are used to treat some of the same problems as bonding. This treatment is an alternative to dental crowns, which are most expensive. The dental procedure requires your dentist to take an Impression of your tooth. Before the custom-made dental veneer is glued directly onto the tooth, your dentist will lightly buff the tooth to compensate for the added thickness of the dental veneer. Once the cement is between the dental veneer and your tooth, a light beam is used to harden it. Porcelain veneers require more than one visit because they are fabricated in a laboratory.Dental Veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than bonding.

E. Teeth Contouring and Reshaping

Tooth reshaping and contouring, is a procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even over lapping teeth in a single session. Tooth reshaping and dental contouring, is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of your teeth. Contouring teeth may also help correct small problems with bite.It are common for bonding to be combined with tooth reshaping.

This procedure is ideal for candidates with normal healthy teeth, but who want subtle changes to their smile. Your dentist will take X-rays to evaluate the size and locations of the pulp of each tooth ensure that there’s enough bone between the teeth to support them.

Which procedure is right for me?

Dr. Malony can answer many of the questions you may have about techniques used to improve your smile. The condition of your teeth and desired results you want often dictates the best dental procedure. If you are considering a dental treatment, there are a few questions you can ask them before deciding if a particular procedure is right for you.

  • What will the changes look like?
  • What should I expect through the course of treatment?
